<press release>Sagri provides Kirin Holdings with carbon sequestration forecasting services for farmlands in its supply chain. Sagri to launch GHG emissions and carbon removal calculation and reduction/removal activity support business for SBTi-FLAG sector

Sagri Co., Ltd. (CEO: Shunsuke Tsuboi, hereafter “Sagri”) has begun providing its carbon sequestration forecasting service for farmlands in the supply chain to Kirin Holdings Company, Limited (President COO Takeshi Minakata, hereinafter “Kirin Holdings”). Sagri aims to expand its business of calculating agricultural-derived greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon removals, and supporting reduction and removal activities.

After the investment from Kirin Holdings in April 2024 through its corporate venture capital (CVC) fund, the Kirin Health Innovation Fund, Sagri has been working with Kirin Holdings to explore initiatives to visualize and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) Scope 3 emissions.

As a first step, Sagri will collaborate with Kirin Holdings and a barley supplier to predict carbon sequestration in farmland where barley, a raw material for beer, is grown. Starting with this initiative, Sagri will keep supporting the Kirin Group Environmental Vision 2050 by expanding the target regions and crops and providing support for the formulation and implementation of strategies to decarbonize farmland in Kirin Holdings’ supply chain.

The Forest, Land and Agriculture (“FLAG”) sector accounts for about 1/4 of global GHG emissions, and emissions are expected to increase as demand for food increases. Sagri will work to solve the issue of climate change from agriculture by providing agricultural GHG emissions and removals calculations and support services for reduction and removal activities to targeted companies in the FLAG sector at SBTi.

Science Based Targets initiative (“SBTi”): a joint initiative established in 2015 by the World Wildlife Fund WWF, CDP, World Resources Institute WRI and the UN Global Compact. With the goal of preventing climate change and increasing the competitiveness of companies in a net-zero economy, SBTi develops guidance to help companies set targets based on science on how much specific greenhouse gas emissions they need to reduce and by when. Based on this guidance, SBTi assists companies in setting science-based targets (SBT) and grants SBT certification to those companies that are found to be in compliance.
