Sagri Co., Ltd. proposes next-generation paddy field management solutions utilizing satellite data and AI in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

Supporting efficient water resource use and environmental impact reduction in paddy fields

Sagri Co., Ltd. (Headquartered in Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture, CEO: Shunsuke Tsuboi), a company that leverages satellite data and AI to address agricultural and environmental challenges, has proposed an integrated paddy field management solution*¹ combining satellite data, IoT sensors, and process-based models in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia. This approach features the use of process-based models to estimate water levels and is expected not only to enhance conventional water management but also to contribute to decarbonizing paddy fields by reducing the costs associated with carbon credit generation.

Moving forward, Sagri will continue discussions with local stakeholders to promote the adoption of this method and alleviate the burdens faced by farmers and irrigation associations.

The Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia are major rice-producing regions where irrigation associations and farmers are responsible for managing water in paddy fields. However, there is a growing need to reduce costs, conserve water, and improve water distribution. In particular, in the Philippines, following the establishment of a JCM methodology for paddy field water management, reducing the burden of data collection (MRV) required for carbon credit generation has become a key challenge.

To help address these issues, Sagri has proposed an integrated paddy field management solution that combines satellite data, IoT sensors, and process-based models to local stakeholders in the Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

Activity Highlights (Selected Public Information):

Philippines:

Sagri introduced its next-generation paddy field management solution to the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), which oversees irrigation in the Philippines, and discussed future actions toward its implementation.

Vietnam:

At the Asia-Pacific Regional Workshop on Scaling Climate Solutions in Agrifood Systems organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Sagri’s Director and Chief Research Officer, Mr. Tanaka, introduced the company’s next-generation paddy field management solution to government ministries, related institutions, and companies from Vietnam and other Asian countries.
